Myopia (Nearsightedness)
What is Myopia (Nearsightedness)?
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common refractive error that makes it difficult for a person to see distant objects clearly. Patients can see near objects clearly. It is often diagnosed in childhood and is caused when the shape of the eye causes light to bend incorrectly.
Causes of Myopia (Nearsightedness)
Myopia is caused by a steeply curved cornea or elongated eye. It may develop gradually or rapidly, and often becomes worse during childhood and adolescence. Nearsightedness tends to run in families.
Symptoms of Myopia (Nearsightedness)
Headaches, squinting, and pain in the eye are all symptoms of nearsightedness. Patients will experience blurry vision when looking at distant objects and difficulty driving, especially at night. Since this condition is typically diagnosed during childhood, watch for children who rub their eyes frequently, blink excessively, want to sit close to screens, and seem unaware of distant objects.
Diagnosis of Myopia (Nearsightedness)
If your vision is causing you trouble or discomfort, schedule an eye exam. A comprehensive dilated eye exam will be conducted, including a vision acuity test, a refraction test, and a slit-lamp exam.
Treatment for Myopia (Nearsightedness)
Prescription contact lenses and corrective surgery are the most common treatments for patients with Myopia. Surgery options may include LASIK, photorefractive keratectomy, or a surgery that implants a corrective lens. Your ophthalmologist will discuss the best option for you.
