Cornea and External Eye Disease

What is Cornea and External Eye Disease?

A range of eye conditions can affect the external eye or ocular surface, including allergies, conjunctivitis, dry eyes, corneal infections, and corneal dystrophies. Some are easily resolved with medications, while others might require surgery. Cizik Eye Center ophthalmologists are experts in identifying and treating diseases of the cornea and external eye. They can also provide advanced treatments, including medications, laser surgery, and corneal transplants.

Causes of Cornea and External Eye Disease

The cornea is the clear outer layer of the eye that covers the pupil, iris, and anterior chamber. Its job is to refract light, but there are conditions that might prevent it from performing properly. Deep abrasions, for example, could cause scars that could lead to visual impairments. Injury, infection, hereditary conditions, and allergic reactions to medication can also cause cornea or external eye disease.

One common corneal disorder, keratoconus, happens when the cornea thins and bulges. It can be treated with special contact lenses, surgery, or laser procedures. ?

Symptoms of Cornea and External Eye Disease

Eye pain, eye discharge, and excessive tearing may be symptoms of a cornea or external eye condition. Patients may also experience reduced vision and sensitivity to light. Nausea, headaches, and fatigue are also potential symptoms.

Diagnosis of Cornea and External Eye Disease

Your ophthalmologist will discuss your symptoms and conduct a full eye exam that includes dilating your pupil to see inside your eye. Special eye drops will be used to widen your pupil. Your doctor can see if you have any eye damage or blocked vision. Several other exams might also be conducted, including tests to measure the structure, thickness, and pressure inside the eye.

Treatment of Cornea and External Eye Disease

For common eye conditions, including allergies, minor injuries, and infections, your doctor may prescribe special eyedrops or eye ointment. Some conditions may require glasses or contact lenses. Laser surgery might be conducted to reshape or restore the cornea. Surgery might also be performed if a foreign object needs to be removed from the cornea or if an injury to the cornea needs to be repaired.

A number of cornea procedures can be performed to correct specific issues, including cornea inlays and corneal transplant. Your doctor will discuss the procedure that will best help restore your vision.
