Cosmetic Injectables: Botox®, Xeomin® and Dysport®
What are cosmetic injectables?
Botox® is a well-established, effective facial injectable that has been helping patients reduce wrinkles and look younger since it gained FDA approval in 2002. Today’s consumers have other options for safe, purified botulinum toxin when considering quick, non-invasive methods to seemingly turn back time, including Xeomin® and Dysport®. All three reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine facial lines when administered by a qualified professional.
How do cosmetic injectables work?
These neuromodulators block communications between nerves and their muscles, which allows the muscles to relax and lessens the signs of wrinkles and aging for between three and six months, depending on the patient and the amount administered. While the muscles are less able to contract, wrinkles are less likely to form or deepen.
Botox®
Botox generally requires 10-30 units for most needs and produces results within about 72 hours to 1 week. Botox® is also used to treat other conditions, including migraines, eyelid spasms, and excessive sweating.
Dysport®
Dysport gained FDA approval in 2009, but has been used in Europe since the 1990s.
Xeomin®
Xeomin earned FDA approval in 2011. It is often described as the “purest” injectable because it does not contain the same complex protein as Botox and Dysport.
Should I expect any side effects?
All three products are FDA-approved and considered safe and effective. Side effects can include headaches, irritation, temporary bruising, dry eyes, blurry vision and pain at the injection site. Your Cizik Eye Clinic physician will discuss any additional side effects with you and answer any of your questions before the procedure.
Which of these skin-smoothing injectables you choose is likely not as important as who you chose to perform the procedure. You can trust that UTHealth Houston physicians at the Cizik Eye Clinic have years of experience and expertise that will allow the best possible result for you.
